Autumn New Forest

Autumn in the New Forest: Where to See the Best Autumn Colours

Why We Love Autumn in the New Forest

There’s something undeniably magical about the New Forest in autumn. The air turns crisp, the woodlands burst into a kaleidoscope of reds, oranges and golds, and the pace of life just… slows down a bit. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to put your phone away, pull on a pair of boots, and just wander.

October and early November are peak times for autumn colour — the trees are glowing, the mornings are misty, and the forest feels like something straight out of a storybook. Whether you’re here for a weekend escape or a longer break, this time of year is all about slowing down, getting outdoors, and embracing the season.

And if you ask us, there’s nowhere better to do that than right here.

The Best Spots to Soak Up Autumn Colours

The great thing about the New Forest is that you’re never far from a beautiful walk. But if you’re looking for those really wow moments — trees dripping with colour, golden leaves crunching underfoot — here are some of our go-to places:

1. Rhinefield Ornamental Drive

This one’s a classic, and for good reason. Think towering redwoods, copper beeches, and Douglas firs lining a quiet, winding road that looks like it belongs in Canada or the Pacific Northwest.

There’s a spot along the drive called Blackwater Arboretum, which is well worth parking up for. Take a slow wander through and admire trees from all over the world, with a bonus of rustling leaves and that wonderful earthy autumn smell.

Top tip: If you catch it at golden hour (just before sunset), the light through the trees is incredible.

2. Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary

This is a great spot if you’re bringing the family — or just love a bit of wildlife spotting. There’s a raised viewing platform overlooking a meadow where deer often gather, especially in the early morning or around dusk.

But even if the deer are feeling shy, the surrounding woodland is beautiful in its own right. Easy walking paths, dappled light through the canopy, and plenty of space to just roam.

Did you know? October is rutting season, which means you might even hear the stags bellowing — a proper autumn soundtrack!

3. Knightwood Oak Trail

This is a gentle, circular trail that leads you through peaceful woodland, including a visit to the Knightwood Oak, one of the oldest and largest trees in the forest. It’s thought to be over 500 years old!

The walk itself is super accessible — great if you don’t want anything too strenuous — and it’s packed with beautiful old oaks and beeches. When the leaves turn, the whole place feels golden.

Mood: Quiet, ancient woodland energy. Bring a flask and take your time.

4. Wilverley Inclosure

A bit less well-known, but one of our favourite spots for a peaceful stroll. The mix of pine and deciduous trees means you get some great contrast — dark green against fiery orange. It’s often quiet here too, so perfect if you’re after a bit of space and silence.

There are a few different loop walks you can do, so it’s easy to tailor depending on how far you fancy going.

Make the Most of Your Autumn Walk

Autumn in the forest is gorgeous, but it does come with the usual British unpredictability. Here are a few quick tips to help you enjoy it fully:

  • Wear good boots or wellies – some paths get muddy, but it’s all part of the fun.

  • Bring layers – mornings can be chilly, but you’ll warm up as you walk.

  • Pack a flask – hot chocolate or spiced tea is always a good idea.

  • Go early (or late) – for the best light and quieter trails.

  • Keep your eyes peeled – deer, pigs (out for pannage!), and birds are all active in autumn.

Fancy a bit of foraging? You might spot mushrooms and chestnuts — just make sure you know what you’re picking before you snack!

Cosy Pubs & Places to Refuel

One of the best parts about autumn walks? Finishing them in a warm pub with a fire going and something hearty on your plate. Here are a few we always recommend:

  • The Oak Inn, Lyndhurst – A classic country pub with a roaring fire, Sunday roasts, and muddy-boot-friendly vibes.

  • The Royal Oak, Fritham – Super cosy and traditional, with ales, simple honest food, and an unbeatable forest setting.

  • The Pig, Brockenhurst – A little more upscale, but still rustic. Think garden-to-plate food, comfy armchairs, and a great wine list.

Whether you’re into roaring log fires, mulled cider, or just a good sandwich, there’s something for every taste here.

 Stay a Little Longer…

Why rush home when you could stay a night or two and really settle into the season?

We’ve got some beautiful places to stay that are perfect for an autumn break — from cosy cottages with log burners, to forest lodges where you can watch the leaves fall outside your window.

Some of our favourite autumn-friendly stays include:

  • Dog-friendly cottages right on the edge of the forest

  • Cabins with floor-to-ceiling windows for maximum leaf peeping

  • Romantic shepherd’s huts with fire pits and blankets

Autumn in the New Forest isn’t loud or flashy — it’s calm, colourful, and quietly spectacular. It’s about slowing down, stepping outside, and soaking up those simple pleasures: a crisp morning walk, the crunch of leaves underfoot, a roast dinner in a country pub, or watching the mist rise through the trees.

If you’re looking for a break from busy, noisy, everyday life — this is your season. And the New Forest is ready and waiting.
